Parashah Chukat (regulation) Numbers 19:1-22:1

The title “Chukat” comes from the phrase which is used for a Divine ordinance that has no “rational” rationalization.

Inside the class of Chukim (plural) are two ranges;
1) these decrees that might in precept be understood by human intelligence, however particulars of that are past comprehension, and
2) these that are fully past the scope of human understanding. The regulation of the Crimson Heifer belongs to the second class.

Even Solomon, who possessed nice knowledge, mentioned that the one a part of God’s Torah that he couldn’t clarify have been the instructions in regards to the crimson heifer. This weeks portion offers with the ashes of the crimson heifer, that are important to us after we seek advice from ritual cleaning. It is vitally vital to do not forget that to be unclean will not be essentially to be in sin.

Many commandments are open to human understanding as they’re explainable for social or ethical causes, versus the Chukim which require us to obey with out essentially understanding the explanations for them.

The Ashes of the Crimson Heifer

One era has handed and one other has grown up in freedom, ready to enter the Land of Israel. The leaders of the older era, too, are departing: first Miriam (Bamidbar 20:1), after which Aharon move away in the identical 12 months. The instruction for this ritual is given earlier than the passing of Mirium and Aharon.

Many of the sacrifices of Israel have been bullocks. Logically, it’s extra fascinating to sacrifice bullocks than heifers as a result of heifers are used for producing offspring and for milk, so providing them for sacrifices could be very sacrificial. On this case, the feminine is obtainable, spotless and selection.

The ashes of the crimson heifer have been used to purify the unclean, significantly those that had come into contact with a lifeless physique. They may not come into the tabernacle with out first being sprinkled with an answer of water and the ashes of the crimson heifer. Even so, they have been thought of unclean till night. From the ashes of this heifer the purification water was made and saved within the houses of the clergymen all through the entire land of Israel. That method, those that had been in touch with a lifeless physique would have the ability to purify themselves for seven days in accordance with the commandment. Solely small quantities of ashes have been wanted for giant quantities of water. Thus the ashes from the sacrifice of 1 heifer lasted for a few years.
The Torah says {that a} crimson thread which tied collectively the cedar wooden and the hyssop, have been thrown into the fireplace with the burning flesh and the ensuing ashes Yahweh used to cleanse those that have been unclean. Discover that the priest who supervised the method was ritually impure and couldn’t enter the camp or metropolis till he had immersed himself and his clothes in water.
One of many elementary necessities is that the heifer needed to be utterly crimson. The prophet has defined that sin is described as crimson; “although your sins be as scarlet, they shall be white as snow” (Isaiah 1,18)

All through the historical past of Israel as much as 70 AD, the ashes of 9 crimson heifers have been ready, and the custom is that the tenth one might be ready when Mashiach comes. When Yahweh conveyed to Moshe the statute of the crimson heifer, it’s understood that the ashes from the unique have been to be combined in with the subsequent, so that there’s at all times a continuance from the unique crimson heifer which Moshe ready. It has been recorded that 9 heifers altogether have been slaughtered over Israel’s historical past (Mishnah Parah 3:5). Now, to proceed this ordinance, a crimson heifer should be discovered and the remaining ashes from the earlier temple period should be introduced out from the place they’ve been preserved to as soon as once more make the “waters of purification” for the defilement of loss of life.
Actually it’s known as the “waters of menstruation” . It is because, simply because the menstrual circulate of blood cleanses away the loss of life of a possible life, so these waters (crimson because the likeness of blood and representing blood) cleanse an individual from the contamination of loss of life.

The Jews are at a loss to clarify the importance of this ritual. The crimson cow is a ritual that is sensible solely when Yeshua the Messiah is added to the image.

Listed here are some clues linking the Crimson Cow to Yeshua; the colour crimson, the burning of the cow, the cow’s spotless purity, she had by no means born a yoke, the heifer was slain outdoors the camp. Moreover, hyssop, cedar wooden tied with scarlet wool have been thrown into the fireplace. Every was symbolic of one thing.

  • Crimson is the colour of the stain of sin (Isa. 1:18, “although your sins be as scarlet…crimson like crimson.”). Crimson can be the colour of the tzaaras pores and skin an infection handled in Leviticus 13:19,24,42-43.

Crimson can be the colour of clay earth out of which Yahweh shaped the primary man naming him Adam (Robust’s H#119/120) which implies ruddy, crimson, bloody or rosy in coloration. Crimson can be the colour of the Second Adam, Yeshua the Messiah who was actually crimson lined in his personal sacrificial blood whereas hanging on the cross.

  • Burning the cow represents the loss of life and struggling of Messiah on the cross. Extra care was exercised in selecting a spotless cow than in some other sacrifice. This spotless purity represents Messiah Yeshua the proper sacrifice.
  • The crimson cow had born no yoke. Equally, Messiah was neither below the yoke of sin nor was beholden to or below bondage to any human, establishment, authorities, non secular system or the rest of an earthly nature.
  • The heifer was slain outdoors of the camp. In the course of the first and second temple eras the crimson heifer was slain on the Mount of Olives by the clergymen. The Mount of Olives was situated off the Temple Mount and out of doors the partitions of the town of Jerusalem (see The Pentateuch/Numbers, p. .329, by Rabbi Samson Hirsch). Messiah Yeshua was sacrificed outdoors of the town gates of Jerusalem (Heb. 13:12) and really attainable, opposite to Christian custom, on the Mount of Olives from which the entrance of the temple and the veil was clearly seen from the place of crucifixion (Matt. 27:51, 54; Mark 15:38-39).
  • The heifer was completely burnt. Messiah suffered in physique, soul and spirit (Isa. 53) to atone for man’s sin. Into the burnt providing fireplace went three issues (See Stone Version Chumash, commentary on Lev. 14:3, p. 621)
  • cedar wooden = haughtiness and loftiness of sinner in rise up towards God. This factors to the cross, which was manufactured from wooden.
  • hyssop = to realize atonement the cedar one should bow in humility like a blade of hyssop. Hyssop was used to place the blood of the Pesach Lamb on the doorposts in addition to to place the bitter wine to Yeshua’s lips whereas on the cross. It’s a medicinal plant identified for its cleaning properties (Ps.51:7)
  • scarlet = the stain of sin (Isa 1:18); the clergymen made crimson with dye from a snail or insect _ a lowly creature symbolizing the penitent’s new-found humility. This is likely one of the colours of royalty and prosperity (Proverbs 31:21, Daniel 5:7, Rev 17:4). It’s the coloration Matthew describes as that of the gown the Roman troopers placed on Yeshua on Passover (Matt 27:28).

We additionally see these three used collectively, the cedar wooden, the hyssop and the scarlet, in Leviticus 14 for cleaning.
Paradoxically, the preparation of the crimson heifer renders every particular person concerned unclean. The priest who oversees the slaughter and the burning is rendered unclean. The person who ignites the fireplace is rendered unclean. The person who gathers the ashes collectively is rendered unclean. We be taught in Numbers 19:21 that the one who sprinkles the water can be rendered unclean solely till night, not like these unclean from precise contact with loss of life who have been unclean for seven days. This is likely one of the nice paradoxes of Torah. So too, in an effort to cleanse us, the Grasp turned unclean. As a way to liberate us from loss of life, He died. Yeshua took the curse upon Himself. He turned loss of life for us, in order that we is perhaps free of loss of life. Simply as these administering purification from loss of life, are rendered unclean, so too Yeshua was made unclean, even taking over the contaminating impurity of non secular loss of life itself, in an effort to cleanse us from sin and loss of life.

The author of the e-book of Hebrews particularly mentions in Hebrews 9:13-14 the ashes of the crimson heifer. What’s extra, he attributes efficacy to them as regards cleaning the flesh. The passage compares the blood of Messiah to the ashes of the crimson heifer. If the ashes of the crimson heifer work on the surface (the flesh), how way more so does the blood of Messiah work on the within cleaning (the conscience) from sin. Within the case of Yeshua, his shed blood performs a central half in our cleaning. Had been it not for the blood, which was freely spilled, we’d perpetually be in a state of non secular tamei! Thanks be unto God, His blood was poured out for us to cleanse us from all defilement of loss of life, each pure and non secular!

Immersion for Cleaning

“Then the clear particular person shall sprinkle on the unclean on the third day and on the seventh day; and on the seventh day he shall purify him from uncleanness, and he shall wash his garments and bathe himself in water and shall be clear by night.” (Numbers 19:19)

The Torah says that touching a corpse makes an individual ritually unclean. To be cleansed, an individual wanted to be sprinkled with ashes from the crimson heifer. After finishing the seven-day purification course of by sprinklings with ashes of the crimson heifer, the defiled particular person was to immerse himself in water after which he was pronounced clear.

In conventional Jewish follow, a corpse is ready for burial by a particular ritual washing of the physique. To be amongst those that take care of the lifeless on this method is taken into account a excessive honor in Judaism. The early believers practiced the customary washing of the physique. For instance, when Tabitha died, Acts 9:37 says the group of believers washed her physique. The ritual washing of the physique is an expression of religion within the resurrection of the lifeless. It’s a preparation for resurrection.

Those that conduct the ritual washing, nevertheless, essentially contract corpse contamination. Although the ashes of the crimson heifer wouldn’t have been utilized to individuals dwelling outdoors the land of Israel, the believers in Corinth would nonetheless have undergone the prescribed immersion in a mikvah (immersion bathtub). The identical follow of immersing after washing the lifeless persists within the Jewish group right now. Subsequently, Paul asks rhetorically, “If the lifeless usually are not raised in any respect, why then are they baptized for them?” (1 Cor. 15:29) In different phrases, if the lifeless usually are not raised, why follow the ritual washing of the physique? The lifeless might be raised, and the rituals of cleaning from corpse contamination testify to that coming resurrection. In that day, we might be cleansed from the ritual impurity of our dying, mortal our bodies. We might be raised imperishable and pure like our righteous Messiah.

“A person who’s clear shall collect up the ashes of the heifer, and lay them up outdoors of the camp in a clear place; and it shall be saved for the congregation of the kids of Yisra’el for a water for impurity: it’s a sin-offering.” (19:9 HNV) – The ashes from the crimson heifer was cut up up into three elements, one half was positioned on the Mount of Olives, one other was positioned within the space known as “chel” and which surrounded the court docket of the temple, and one half was divided up between the twenty-four teams of clergymen that served on the temple. Based on Mishnah,[Mishnah Parah 3:1] the half that was on the Mount of Olives was used to consecrate the Excessive Monks who was to arrange extra crimson heifers. The ashes that have been saved within the chel have been meant for future generations, which this verse speaks about. The a part of the ashes that was out within the land among the many clergymen served to cleanse these of the kids of Israel who lived within the different cities.

Moshe Strikes the Rock Numbers 20

The Aramaic Targums and oral custom file that when Miriam died, the ‘properly’ of water which had been with them as a supply of provide for the 38 years, dried up. Miriam was a Tzaddik, (a righteous particular person) and so they had this blessing due to her prayer. That is Israel’s final 12 months within the wilderness, thirty eight years since they have been instructed they might not enter into the land. There are not any data of the occasions in these years till we come to this time. The entire first era have been deceased apart from Moshe, Aharon, Caleb and Yehoshua and people of the tribe of Levi who weren’t represented in looking for the land and who subsequently weren’t members within the sin of the nation. In Yehoshua 14: 1; 17: 4; 19:51; 21: 1, Eleazar, the brand new excessive priest, is talked about as helping Yehoshua in distributing the inheritance to the tribes after getting into the land. Aharon and Mirium die in the identical 12 months.

This example appears much like the previous within the earlier era, of the individuals complaining towards Moshe and Aharon. The rod which Moshe is commanded to take is the one which was earlier than Yahweh – the one positioned in entrance of the Ark within the Holy Place. This was the anointed Department which had been positioned within the Holy Place as an indication of Aaron’s ordination by Yahweh. It was to be an indication to any future group that rebelled towards the management of Aharon and Moshe. (It was later used for the ordination of kings) And so, with this rebellion Moshe is instructed to go take the symbolic rod and exit to the individuals. He rebuked them for his or her rise up and struck the rock as a substitute of talking solely to the Rock which might have glorified the ability of Yahweh.

Right here Moshe simply on the finish of the lengthy journey and a few years of trustworthy shepherding of Yahweh’s individuals amidst many trials with them, acts in a way that causes him to not be allowed to enter the promised land. We are inclined to overlook that Moshe and Aaron have been held equally chargeable for this motion. The realm the place Moshe is reported to strike the rock is a extremely popular and hostile a part of the nation. In entrance of numerous thirsty individuals the stress mounted and in a second of anger and indecision, anger welled up inside Moshe and he struck the rock in disobedience as a substitute of what he was instructed to do and converse to it in His Identify.

This incident on the Rock was considered one of Moshe appearing within the flesh. He had been instructed to take the anointed rod from earlier than His Presence and converse to the Rock in His title, and never be concerned within the issuing forth of the water as he had been on the earlier event by placing the rock. Yahweh wished to be sanctified within the sight of the individuals for them to see His energy demonstrated with out an middleman on the invoking of His title. Think about the affect when an inanimate object corresponding to a rock responded to a command. It will have introduced the individuals to a better esteem of Yahweh. It was His reply to the individuals’s focus being on Moshe and Aaron and never wanting past them to Him as their supply of all issues.

There isn’t a file of this new era having seen the ability of Yahweh at work. The availability of manna had develop into commonplace as was His Presence of their midst within the Cloud, they wanted a contemporary revelation of His manifest energy. And, whereas the individuals had appeared to Moshe and he had been established of their sight as one who had the ability to carry out miracles, whom He had chosen to be His consultant, He wished this new era that was to enter the land to go to a better degree of religion and look to Him immediately. Moshe failed to maneuver out of the best way and transfer into the brand new realm of religion, as he mentioned, “should we carry water for you out of this rock” (20:13). And so, each Moshe and Aaron are judged and never in a position to take the individuals into the land. Moshe’s anger with the individuals induced him to insurgent towards the command which he was given. It constituted a disqualification from management. His disobedience, outburst of anger, and harsh phrases have been prevented him entrance into his inheritance.

In Psalm 106:32-33, it’s written, “They angered him additionally on the waters of Merivah, in order that Moshe was troubled for his or her sakes; as a result of they have been rebellious towards his spirit, he spoke rashly along with his lips.”

Moshe and Aharon, the leaders of the nation appointed by Yahweh, act out of their very own mindset and react towards the individuals’s rise up. Yahweh permits the water to circulate from the rock after it’s struck the second time. He doesn’t enable the individuals to endure greater than they might deal with due to the disobedience of the leaders. But, together with His mercy, we see a reminder of His necessities of accountability particularly the place chosen leaders are concerned. Moshe was in a excessive visibility place. The higher the calling the higher the accountability. Moshe, after his error, was not written off by Yahweh. He continued to meet his calling however was denied the blessing, their entry into the Promised Land.

Moshe broke prophecy by placing the rock. Yeshua is the rock from which Israel drank. When he spoke to the Samaritan lady, He recognized Himself as this “Yeshua answered her, If you happen to knew the present of God, and who it’s that mentioned to you, Give me to drink; you’ll have requested him, and he would have given you dwelling water.” (John 4:10).

Moshe negotiates with the Edomites

Their journey now take them into shut proximity to some territorial enemies of theirs. In an act of cordiality and humility, Moshe gives to move by means of the land of the Edomites with out disturbing what belonged to Edom. He even makes use of the identification marker of brother highlighting the well-known incontrovertible fact that Edom was a descendant of Esav, the brother of Yaakov whom the Israelites have been descendants of. However regardless of his light pleadings in 20:14-21, Edom refused to permit passage, and as a substitute turned a closed door to the wandering descendants of Yaakov. The King of Edom was not too positive that he would have the ability to eliminate almost three million individuals if he allow them to into his territory. Edom even issued a risk of the sword upon any that might cross into his land. This incident might be remembered for ages to return. Yahweh was not happy with Edom and his prophets file Yahweh’s coronary heart on the matter later for the individuals to learn and perceive. For now, Israel had no alternative however to adjust to Edom, and go across the great distance.

In chapter 21, we learn of their involvement with the king of the Emori. Once more, the identical invitation is obtainable to them as with the Edomites, however this time Sichon, king of the Emori takes to the offence and assaults Israel. Yahweh intervenes and Israel defeats the Emori all the best way as much as the borders of the individuals of Amon. Following this profitable marketing campaign, Yahweh instructs Moshe to muster a small military and go towards Og the king of Bashan as properly. Moshe does, and Yahweh causes a terrific victory there as properly, with their full destruction.
The guarantees of Yahweh didn’t come with no wrestle. The Promised Land was not simply handed over to the individuals. Relatively, to safe what was theirs by covenant proper, the individuals must undergo the wrestle to realize possession of it.

This parts mentions lots of the names of the locations that the Israelites handed by or sojourned at throughout their time within the wilderness. A few of the locations talked about within the portion are identified to us right now and others are misplaced. A few of these which are identified to us right now and may be discovered on a contemporary map of Israel are; Kadesh Barnea, on the Western border of Israel with Sinai; Ovot or Ir Ovot (the town of Ovot), within the Arava on the street from the Useless Sea to Eilat; The Jordan River, Israel’s Japanese border with Jordan; The Bashan is what is thought right now because the Golan Heights, the strategic piece of land bordering with Syria and the town of Jericho, nonetheless in the identical place that it was all these a few years in the past!

The Bronze Serpent

Because the individuals went round Edom (land of the descendants of Esau, Yaakov’s brother), they started to complain towards Moshe and Yahweh in in regards to the manna and the water.

Within the Gospels and Epistles, Yeshua is in comparison with the manna and the water. God despatched “fiery serpents” to afflict the individuals. He then gave Moshe the instruction of inserting a “serpent” on a stick for individuals to look upon in an effort to escape the punishment. Yeshua immediately compares His coming to earth and being “lifted up”, to the actions of Moshe lifting up the saraph/serpent on the stick (John 3:14).

When God first offers Moshe this instruction (21:8), the time period discovered within the Hebrew textual content (translated “serpent”) is Saraph, a sort of angel. The serpent within the backyard represented the one who as soon as was Lucifer, the overlaying cherub within the Holy Place in heaven itself – the arch angel.

Moshe makes a bodily illustration of the Saraph within the type of a copper serpent. The phrase for serpent (nachash), is spelled Nun-Chet-Shin. The phrase for copper comes from the identical three-letter root and is spelled Nun-Chet-Shin-Tav. In Hebraic research an vital level is made that the gematria (numerical worth) of Mashiach (Messiah) and nachash (serpent) are each 358. When phrases have the identical numerical worth they’re associated in essence, even when diametrically opposed on the floor. On this sense, the yetzer hara (evil inclination) that got here with the autumn of Adam (linked to the serpent) might be reworked by the Messiah right into a drive which does good. He was lifted up because the identification of all that the serpent induced and have become sin for us. Now, all who look to Him because the supply of their salvation from the penalty of their sin, might be saved.

The serpent on the bronze pole is one other prophetic image of the redemptive work of Yeshua. The bronze pole symbolises judgement. The fiery serpents have been a righteous judgment that Yahweh introduced upon Israel for murmuring and unbelief. Israel had “sharpened their tongues like a serpent” (Psalm 140:3) and “their throat [was] an open sepulcher; with their tongues have…used deceit; the poison of asps [was] below their lips” (Rom. 3:13). All this was directed at Yahweh and Moshe. They reaped what that they had sown. He loosed fiery serpents upon the Israelites to chew and sting to loss of life the unbelieving murmurers.

How usually can we lash out with our tongues to kill, steal and destroy, to sow discord amongst brethren (which Yahweh hates and calls an abomination Prov. 6:16-19). The mouths of the unrighteous are an open tomb spewing out loss of life and destruction (Rom. 3:13; Prov. 18:21). Many instances it’s the little feedback, the innuendos, the sharp vocal tones, the little sarcasms, the cryptic feedback, the criticisms and complaints in passing that do essentially the most harm to others and grieve the Holy Spirit in our lives and in our assemblies. Pray that you’d be so filled with the love of the Spirit that no evil phrase would come out of your mouth, solely that which is life to others.

The rabbis educate that Israel was punished with serpents as a result of they acted within the method of the serpent that deceived Adam and Eve, for they spoke malicious slander towards the manna. Each incidents concerned meals, a terrific space of weak spot and one to which people are topic to temptation

Parallels between the bronze serpent and Yeshua:

  • Each the serpent and Messiah have been lifted up on a pole.
  • Israel was to look as much as the brass serpent; sinners are to look as much as Messiah to be saved.
  • Yahweh supplied salvation from the sting of loss of life from no different supply however the serpent.
  • Have a look at bronze serpent and dwell; have a look at Messiah and dwell.

Each the serpent and the cross are merely symbols of Yahweh’s grace and mercy. They merely level one to Yahweh in heaven who heals those that consider him and place confidence in him. Equally, there’s salvation in no different title however in Yeshua (Acts 4:12).

The satan is the good crimson dragon/serpent (Rev. 12:3) whose venom inflames males’s sinful passions by means of his fiery darts geared toward people (Eph. 6:16). Fiery serpent is the Hebrew phrase saraph the plural of which is seraphim which is a sort of an angelic, flaming spirit (Heb. 1:7). Although bodily snakes bit the Israelites, that is however an image of Devil, the fallen angelic being who’s now the serpent and enemy of each Yahweh and man. Israel went although all these items for our examples (1 Cor. 10:1-12). How they reacted to varied conditions is actually a mirror held up for our profit for us to see ourselves as we actually are so that we’ll not repeat their errors. We owe them a debt of gratitude, for we’re in a position to achieve spiritually at their expense.

The kids of Israel saved the brass serpent for about seven hundred years when King Hezekiah lastly destroyed it as a result of the individuals have been misusing it. This textual content teaches us that one thing constructive that was given by the Everlasting in an effort to bless the individuals, can develop into an idolatrous cult and a curse. In the identical method the loss of life of the Messiah, and even the cross, has develop into a cultic object that’s worshipped by means of songs, incense, lighting of candles, and many others.. Issues which have been used to attract us near Yahweh God can develop into an idolatrous object in themselves.
Some attention-grabbing or further data: – the bronze snake that Moshe was instructed to make is the image used right now by many medical establishments and practices.

Aahron’s Passing

Aharon is to ascend Mount Hor dressed within the particular clothes of the Kohen Gadol. The switch of those garments to his older son Eleazar will represent the transmission of the workplace of Excessive Priest. Then Aharon will give up his soul blissfully to Yahweh.

Aharon died, as he lived, completely dedicated to serving Yahweh: and so they ascended Mount Hor earlier than the eyes of the complete meeting. And Moshe stripped Aharon of his clothes and dressed Eleazar his son in them, and Aharon died there on high of the mountain, and Moshe and Eleazar descended from the mountain. (Bamidbar 20:27-28)
Aharon’s duties as Kohen Gadol weren’t full till he fulfilled the switch of his workplace to Eleazar. The identical is true of each type of service to Yahweh. It isn’t sufficient that we serve Him, we’re duty-bound to make sure that the subsequent era will achieve this, as properly, identical to Aharon.

Many individuals have requested why it’s that we mourn for first seven days after which to a complete of thirty days. Within the portion we have now all of the solutions. For the primary seven days, in addition to the truth that the bereaved are having to cope with a whole lot of ache, they’re additionally unclean in the event that they got here into contact with the deceased or if the loss of life was within the residence. Within the instances of previous, most individuals handed away at residence or have been killed in battle. Historically the household ready the deceased for burial. The primary seven days (shiva) is the time when family and friends rally to satisfy the wants of the bereaved. They don’t seem to be anticipated to prepare dinner or clear or carry out any common each day duties. The mourning is for a complete of thirty days (20:29), that is for a further 23 days after the preliminary seven. Jewish males don’t shave for this era and this helps to be an outward signal to others to be delicate to their situation. Sack material and ashes are not used however the nook of a garment is torn to mark the beginning of the time of mourning

The Strategy of Overcoming — from sin to victory and salvation

Whereas going by means of the wilderness of life if we have now an angle of gratitude as a substitute of considered one of complaining, murmuring, doubt, worry and unbelief within the phrase and guarantees of Yahweh we might be extra more likely to perceive his functions, directions, his coronary heart and his plans for our lives. One can waste one’s power on murmuring and by no means develop up spiritually, or one can decide to listen to Yahweh and to commune with him within the wilderness of life and search non secular enrichment out of that wilderness and consider it as our coaching floor for getting into the Promised Land as a substitute of the unfavorable attitudes which accomplish nothing besides resulting in loss of life.

Whereas crossing the wilderness Yahweh’s individuals should battle and overcome the enemy – i.e., that which might hold us from fulfilling our God-ordained future to own the land and inheritance He has given us. First comes the combating and in overcoming, the victories.

Yahweh makes rivers to circulate out of seemingly dry and barren conditions. We, too, are known as to return to the rivers of salvation, the river of life and to develop into a river of life to all these with whom we come into contact (John 7:37-39).
