Taraji P. Henson on stigma over phrases like ‘robust black girl’ or ‘black woman magic’: ‘We’re not fairies!’
Oscar nominee Taraji P. Henson not too long ago revealed she ‘takes situation’ with so-called ’empowering’ phrases like ‘robust black girl’ or ‘black woman magic.’
‘We’re not fairies! We do not magically rebound from ache. We damage and endure similar to others,’ the D.C.-born 49-year-old stated throughout Essence Competition’s Wellness Home final Thursday.
‘It began off as an empowerment saying…as a result of [black women are] at all times uncared for, we’re at all times on the backside of the totem pole. We are the least revered on the planet. And so, it got here as a [saying] to empower us. However then, as years [went] on, we have been ignored due to that very assertion.’

Taraji continued: ‘It dehumanizes us. It dehumanizes our ache. It belittles our tears! It belittles our ache. We’re supposed to have the ability to watch our brothers and sons and fathers get murdered on the street however we will take it as a result of we’re robust. We are able to take care of it, we will deal with it. And that is simply not true…
‘The harm that it was creating for us and the stigma round black girls to implement that we’re robust sufficient to recover from something.’
Henson identified how African-American girls statistically obtain much less ache meds in hospital ERs, like Serena Williams’ near-death expertise in 2018.
